The Detroit Red Wings

Hockey in The Motor City

The Detroit Red Wings are one of the oldest franchises, not only in professional hockey, but in all of professional sports in general. Founded in 1926 under the name "Detroit Cougars", The Red Wings were one of the first six teams to join the NHL along with the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, and New York Rangers. These teams have come to be known as the "Original 6". Of all NHL teams, the Red Wings have been one of the most successful having won 11 Stanley Cups in the team's history which is the 3rd most in the NHL behind the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the most of any American based franchise.

While the Red Wings have had a storied history over the last 100 years, recent times have been hard for the organization. After the dominance from the mid 90's stretcing all the way till the early 2010's, the team has hit a rough patch. Owning one of the league's worst records since 2019, The Red Wings have been out of the playoffs for 9 consecutive seasons. However with new additions to the organization such as General Manager Steve Yzerman, one of the greatest Red Wings to ever play for the team, and Head Coach Todd McLellan, as well as a slew of young players, the Red Wings are looking to get back to the glory days of years past.
